The New Year's Issue
Developing Business

‘Tis the season for lists! (Speaking of lists—we hope your activities list includes attending a BBC training in 2010 (see right)). We know that whether or not you have actually committed it to paper, you probably have a list of New Year’s Resolutions. Just in case you haven’t yet added your SBIR/STTR related resolution, we want to offer you some suggestions for highly desirable resolutions that will help you be successful in securing funding in 2010.
From each of us at BBC, we wish you a very happy, healthy, and prosperous 2010!

Bhramara

Bhramara:
I will focus on developing my team. (Having a team with individuals who have expertise in all aspects of an SBIR/STTR project will increase the company’s chances of getting funded and singing a merry little tune on the way to the market.)

Andrea

Andrea:
I will not wait until less than 2 weeks before the deadline to have someone review my draft proposal. (The more time you devote to developing your drafts and allowing for outside review the more time you’ll have to make your proposal highly competitive. You do want to get funded, don’t you?)

Michael

Michael:
I will start drafting my Commercialization Plan ASAP even if I’m still developing my Phase I proposal. (Not only will it give me a head start on Phase II but it will also be useful for my business plan and my investor presentations.)

Kris

Kris:
I will not wait until the day it is due to submit my final proposal electronically. (The list of electronic submission issues is most likely longer than your resolution list! …all easily addressable if you submit ahead of schedule and much less stressful.)

Andy

Andy:
I will make sure to contact agency program staff (after I’ve read the solicitation and instructions). (Talking to the agency (and sending an executive summary if appropriate) prior to submitting a proposal is one of the best ways to insure that you are responsive and potentially competitive).

Lisa

Lisa:
I will be innovative and take risks! (Whether with your SBIR/STTR projects, your company, or beyond, we hope you’ll push the boundaries and go for it in 2010!)

2010 Training Schedule –
We Get Around!

In between hanging holiday lights and baking cookies we’ve been busy working with our collaborators to plan a robust training schedule for early 2010. Make sure to visit our website often for updates to our training schedule. We’ll be conducting SBIR 101 sessions, Proposal Preparation sessions with specific agency focus, and more Government Accounting and Grants Management sessions.

In especially high demand are NIH focused sessions due to the changes to NIH proposal formats effective January 2010. Here’s a highlight of where we’ll be in early 2010:

SBIR/STTR Proposal Preparation with NIH Focus:

January 28-29

Ann Arbor, Michigan

February 3-5
*
Denver, Colorado
(* includes additional ½ day on DoD and NSF)

February 9-10

Charlottesville, Virginia

February 16-17

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

February 22-23

Champaign, Illinois

Stay tuned for additional sessions to be added focused on NSF and DoD. Interested in hosting training in your area? Contact us!
