Lisa Kurek, M.S., Managing Partner
Ms. Kurek joined Ms. Katz-Pek as a Managing Partner in 1997. She holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Ms. Kurek’s experience in the biomedical technology field is extensive. She spent 15 years in product development, sales, sales management, product management and business development within the industry. She has experience in large, publicly-held corporations as well as small entrepreneurial start-up companies.

From 1980 to 1982, Ms. Kurek was involved in medical device development as a product development engineer for Baxter. From 1983 to 1995, she held positions in research and development, worldwide marketing, product management and sales management for Millipore Corporation in Bedford, Massachusetts. Her activities included market research, technical feasibility studies of new technologies, worldwide product introductions and key account management.

In 1995, when the Biosearch Division of Millipore was sold to PerSeptive Biosystems, Ms. Kurek facilitated the transfer of sales and marketing functions to PerSeptive Biosystems and co-managed its North American sales. Later that year, Ms. Kurek became Vice President, Sales and Marketing, for Bio Image, a small entrepreneurial company. There she assisted in reestablishing the company as an entrepreneurial player in the worldwide market.

Ms. Kurek was an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist in 2001.


Michael P. Kurek, Ph.D., M.B.A., Partner
For the past 20 years, Dr. Kurek has held senior management positions in marketing, sales and business development for a number of life science companies—two of which completed successful initial public stock offerings on the NASDAQ exchange. Dr. Kurek was also Vice President of Business Development at the Michigan Center for High Technology, where he was responsible for the business incubator program that served over 50 start-up technology companies. Over his career, Dr. Kurek has demonstrated success on an international scale in defining new product opportunities, developing sales and marketing strategies, and recruiting and managing teams to deliver growth. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from Florida State University and an M.B.A. from Boston University. Dr. Kurek joined BBC in 2001 as a Principal Consultant.

Marilyn (Mickey) Katz-Pek, Partner Emerita
Ms. Katz-Pek has worked with a substantial number of large public and private companies, entrepreneurial biomedical companies, academic, research, and government institutions since founding BBC in 1990. Previously, Ms. Katz-Pek spent 17 years as an administrator at the University of Michigan Medical School, where she was involved in technology transfer, departmental management and the establishment of multidisciplinary centers. In 1985, Ms. Katz-Pek became president of BioQuant, a medical diagnostics company spun off from the University. The company subsequently merged with Pacific BioMetrics and is now publicly traded. Ms. Katz-Pek also co-founded the Michigan Biotechnology Association (now MichBio), and was Director of Biotechnology and Life Sciences at MERRA, a nonprofit economic development organization for high technology in the state of Michigan. She has served as Chairperson of the Michigan Center for High Technology.

Ms. Katz-Pek also served on the National Science Foundation’s advisory panel for review of commercialization plans for the SBIR program and has been an SBIR/STTR reviewer at the National Institutes of Health. She currently is a member of the Board of Directors of Ann Arbor Commerce Bank and is also a Board Member on the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Long-term Development Finance Authority. Previously, she served on the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association and was president of its Michigan affiliate. She currently is a grant reviewer for Indiana’s 21st Century Research and Technology Fund.

Ms. Katz-Pek has been acknowledged as one of Michigan’s top 10 business women from the National Association of Women Business Owners, Greater Detroit Chapter; and has twice been listed as one of Detroit’s Most Influential Women (1997 and 2002).

Andrew Jakimcius, MS, MBA, Principal Consultant
Mr. Jakimcius joined BBC in December 2006. Before joining BBC, Mr. Jakimcius held the position of Technology Licensing Specialist at the Wayne State University office of Technology Commercialization, where he assisted faculty in establishing collaborations with industry, as well as commercializing inventions arising from their research efforts. Prior to that, he was the Executive Vice President of Operations at Genomic Solutions Inc. in Ann Arbor, MI, where he was responsible for research, new product development and manufacturing. He has also held various positions in management and software engineering in biotechnology, machine vision and medical imaging. Mr. Jakimcius earned BSE and MS degrees in bioengineering from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.

Andrea Johanson, Ph.D.
Dr. Andrea Johanson is a research scientist and project manager with over 18 years experience in leading international collaborative research projects. Prior to joining BBC, Dr. Johanson held the position of Biotechnology Program Development Specialist in the Institute of International Agriculture at Michigan State University, responsible for developing the Institute's portfolio of agricultural biotechnology projects and for program reporting to federal funding agencies. She has experience as an international consultant on a broad range of issues relating to international agricultural development, biotechnology, biosafety, intellectual property rights and technology transfer. Dr Johanson holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Reading University, UK, a Masters in Plant Pathology from Cornell University, and a Bachelors Degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, UK.



Kris Bergman, Administrative Manager
Ms. Bergman joined BBC in 2000. She has 20 years of experience in managing schedules, finances and organizations. Prior to joining BBC, Ms. Bergman served as the Global Sales Administrator for Comshare, Inc. in Ann Arbor. As BBC’s Administrative Manager, she is responsible for the day-to-day office management, as well as the financial management for BBC and its clients currently under management.
